System recovery with Knoppix: What to do when good disks go bad |
admin writes "There's an article over at IBM about how to access a non-booting Linux system with a Knoppix CD, get read-write permissions on configuration files, create and manage partitions and filesystems, and copy files to various storage media and over the network.

Knoppix 3.2 Released |
admin writes "KNOPPIX is a bootable CD with a collection of GNU/Linux software, automatic hardware detection, and support for many graphics cards, sound cards, SCSI and USB devices and other peripherals. KNOPPIX can be used as a Linux demo, educational CD, rescue system, or adapted and used as a platform for commercial software product demos. It is not necessary to install anything on a hard disk. Due to on-the-fly decompression, the CD can have up to 2 GB of executable software installed on it.
Available for download here (UK mirror) or freely available at all LUG meetings."

New Linux releases on the horizon |
admin writes "Over the next month you can expect to see the releases of Redhat 9.0, SuSE 8.2 (announcement here) and most likely Mandrake 9.1 as well (unconfirmed).
The new SuSE release sounds really good with all the updated software (KDE 3.1 particually) and integrated wireless LAN support in the YaST configuration tool."
Note: I've gone off SuSE recently - I think the new version might just change my mind.

Have your say in the Linux Format Awards 2002 |
admin writes "The shortlist has been compiled, the ballot boxes stand ready it's time for you to cast your votes and select the worthy winners of this years awards.
There are more categories this year, and due to the sheer volume of nominations, the shortlists in some categories have been extended, so you have more option to vote for who you want. As before, if you don't like any of the candidates, just leave that section blank.
The shortlists were compiled from the nominations you submitted, so once again these are probably the only linux awards in the world where you get to choose, from start to finish, who the winners are!
Have your vote now!"

Are you being counted? |
Anonymous writes "Quite a few of you have probably heard of and are registered with the Linux Counter. I'd also imagine that quite a few of you don't have a clue what I'm talking about.
The Linux counter is a project designed to provide a figure of the ammount of people using Linux.
If you are not registered, then you should get over there now and be counted!
It'll only take a few minutes and will help to provide a real figure.
Go to http://counter.li.org and register now!"

Red Flag Linux beats out Windows in Beijing |
Anonymous writes "Research outfit Gartner has noted an ominous development for Microsoft and other non-indigenous firms operating in China. On 28th December 2001 the Beijing municipal government awarded contracts to six local software vendors, and rejected the seventh bidder - Microsoft. The contract covers office automation, antivirus and operating software, one of the winners being Linux OS vendor Red Flag."
