Samba 3 runs rings around Windows Server 2003 in file serving performance
Microsoft admin writes "An investigation by IT Week Labs has found that the latest release of Samba, the UNIX/Linux software which allows non-Windows systems to communicate using Windows networking protocols, is 2.5 times faster than Windows Server 2003.

You can read the full article at vnunet.com and get samba here."

 Microsoft 'hiding behind Linux'
Microsoft admin writes "Microsoft has employed Akamai's Linux-based servers to protect its Microsoft.com Web site and reduce the site's vulnerability to viruses, worms and denial of service attacks.

Microsoft has been in turmoil over the past couple of weeks, after at least three significant worm and virus attacks. The Microsoft.com Web site was also brought down on at least two separate occasions after a distributed denial of service (DoS) attack.

Read the full story @ ZDNet UK."

Xbox Linux project releases SuSE 8.0 howto
Microsoft admin writes "The Xbox Linux Project has now produced a tutorial on installing SuSE 8.0 on an Xbox, and from the look of it, although getting SuSE running is something of a triumph, the Project still has a way to go before it can be said to have turned the Xbox into a cheap, low-hassle Linux client.

First you need a mod chip, the XBE bootloader and patched SuSE kernel downloaded from the Project, a SuSE nforce driver from the nVidia site, the correct USB adapter for the Xbox and (easy-peasy this bit) a USB keyboard. Oh, and a SuSE 8.0 compatible PC. "

Ballmer 'fesses up to Linux/Windows cost FUD
Microsoft admin writes "Windows is a lot more expensive to run than Linux, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer has finally confessed. Despite Redmond's heroic efforts to defeat common knowledge with elaborately-rigged total cost of ownership 'studies', innuendo, FUD and outright distortions, the rhetorical power of common experience has become too powerful, even for a marketing behemoth like MS.

Interestingly, an old page on the MS Web site claiming that the lower costs of Linux are "a myth" has been removed. In its place is a more reasonable item cheerfully touting the many wonderful features in Windows which Linux, it's said, lacks. "

ITC bans 'offensive' Xbox TV ad
Microsoft admin writes "Microsoft has been ordered to stop showing a TV commercial for its Xbox games console after it was dubbed "offensive, shocking and in bad taste".

The Independent Television Commission (ITC) received 136 complaints about the ad claiming it has caused "considerable distress to many viewers"."

Note: This is so funny.... I wonder what they'd do if enough people complained that the mention of the name of MS is offensive...?

The Microsoft and Linux interoperability story
Microsoft Anonymous writes "Linux, which was described by Windows Division Vice President Brian Valentine as the long-term threat against Microsoft's core business, is banned from interoperating with its common Internet file system, otherwise known as Windows File and Printer Sharing (NOTE: NOT ANY OTHER PART OF WINDOWS).

Because Microsoft has patented features of the file-sharing protocol, open-source developers who implement the protocol could be sued for infringement.

Although the current issue is solely related to Windows file-sharing, it IS however possible that the same techniques could be used in the future to prevent GPL/LGPL licenced software interoperating with ANY aspect of Windows, such as files created using Microsoft Office. They could also make it illegal for you to view a website generated with Microsoft Frontpage with the Mozilla web browser. BUT, there is no indication of this happening at present."

Note: This story has been mis-reported by many sites and has caused confusion with many Linux users. As far as we can tell, these are the REAL facts from a reliable source.

Microsoft To Start Running Anti-Unix Ads
Microsoft Anonymous writes "Unisys and Microsoft plan to launch a marketing campaign Friday that seeks to undermine Unix.

Unisys is spending $25 million on the campaign, spokeswoman Pasha Ray said. Microsoft is adding funding of its own but declined to say how much.

The 18-month project will include advertisements, technical sales efforts and other marketing work plugging Unisys' high-end server and Microsoft's top-end version of Windows--two products that so far have made only their first steps into the data centers where high-end servers often reside. "

Note: In my opinion this is a good thing. Joe Bloggs sits watching his TV and this ad mentions something called Unix... "I wonder what that is..."

AOL Time Warner joins the queue
Microsoft Anonymous writes "That's the queue of people lining up to sue Microsoft, this time over anti-competitive practices affecting Netscape (and other competing browsers).
AOL, which now owns Netscape, wants Microsoft to cease its contested business practices and pay damages.
The company also asked for an immediate injunction against “ongoing and further damage” involving Netscape’s browser, AOL executive John Buckley said."

 Microsoft rig online poll
Microsoft Anonymous writes "In a recent poll run by ZDNet UK concerning web services, Java was the most popular platform from the beginning, however, at the end MS's .net platform had taken a large majority.
An investigation by ZDNet UK revealed just what lengths Microsoft will go to to promote its products..."
