Turbo Linux 6.0.4

Kernel Version: - 2.2.14

KDE Included: - Yes

KDE2 Included: - No

Gnome Included: - Yes

Installation:

Booted from the CD into the non-graphical installation.

TurboLinux then detected my network card (a Realtek Rtl8139a).

There is then the choice of either a normal verbose installation or extended verbose installation, I chose Extended verbose. There are then prompts for the types of networking that is required (e.g. LAN or PPP) and the filesystems to install (e.g. FAT32, SMB, Etc.).

There is then the package installation menu. There are several pre-defined installations and the is the choice of a custom installation. I chose the default installation which took 30 mins to install.

There is then the kernel selection menu, where you have to select the appropriate kernel for your system – this would be very confusing for a novice! There is also a prompt to configure LILO – the boot manager.

You are then prompted to automatically configure the ISA Plug-and-play devices in your system – this detected my Sound Card (A Creative AWE64) and then, went into the X Setup. You can use this to configure you screen resolution and colour depth. I did notice that TurboLinux supports wheelmice. There is then a prompt to configure what is started when the system boots – this would be VERY confusing to a novice.

When I booted the system I discovered that TurboLinux had NOT installed the boot manager, which meant that I could not boot the system! I then had to boot my other Linux system with a bootable CD and installed LILO from that.

Software Content:

The software content of TurboLinux was very disappointing! Although it did include KDE, Enlightenment, Gnome and Apache there was only the ABSOLUTE BASIC amount of other software installed. I had difficulty deciding who this distro is aimed at. If it’s aimed at the home, desktop user, why was so little software included? If it was aimed at Network/Server users, why was there so little software for configuring the network?

Conclusion:

I would not recommend this distro to anyone, except maybe network users with only basic requirements. I realise that the version I tried was not the full version, but there is no point distributing a version that is no use!
