Easy Linux 2.4

Kernel Version: - 2.2.17

KDE Included: - Yes, 1.1.2

KDE2 Included: - Yes, 2.0.1

Gnome Included: - No

XF86 version 4.0

Easy Linux 2.4 comes on 5 CDs: -

1) Installation Disc 1

2) Installation Disc 2 and Star Office 5.1a (German)

3) Games and Apps Disc

4) Star Office 5.2 and Tools Disc

5) Sources Disc

There is also a huge manual included and 90 days of installation support.

Installation:

I booted off Installation Disc 1 into the graphical installation and was prompted to accept the license agreement.

There is then a choice between a Novice installation, an Experienced installation (if you need a LAN client you need to select this) or a Professional installation, I chose the Experienced installation. I was then presented with the choice of having an Internet PC, a Standalone PC or a LAN client and there is a check-box for if you’re installing onto a laptop. You may also choose the desktop style (it’s probably best to stick with the default - even though it’s Windows 98 style!).

Next comes the partitioning. This is relatively easy and done using eIT’s own eFdisk. You are then required to set your time zone and configure your network (either a DHCP or static IP address and DNS servers).

Easy Linux then installs it packages. During this part of the installation you are entertained by a back-flipping penguin (the ePenguin?) which is on top of the installation progress box. Apart from walking around and back-flipping it also gives you information about Easy Linux.

You can now reboot into your new system (it even ejects the CD for you)! After your system has booted up and you’ve logged in (using the username and password supplied) you are required to set the ‘root’ password. After this you are presented with Easy’s 7-step configuration process. The seven steps are:

1) X-Server (Graphics) setup.

2) Install additional software.

3) Configure your Network hardware.

4) Configure your other hardware.

5) Create users.

6) Set up CUPS.

7) Create a rescue disk.

There is an ample amount of assistance and guidance throughout the process (and that’s before you even open the manual!).

Software Content:

Easy Linux 2.4 comes with more software than you could ever possibly use whether you want a games machine or a network server. The wide range of software includes: - Star Office 5.2, KDE 2.0.1, Applixware Office, The Gimp, Netscape 4.76 and 6.0 Beta, Samba, Apache, Squid, Wine, TV Card Apps, VM Ware and CUPS. Easy also contains support for: - USB, automount, ISA Plug-and-Play (and normal Plug-and-Play of course) and Autorun (each of their CDs contains an autorun which will present you with a menu when you insert each disc).

Conclusion:

Easy Linux is designed for a novice user and really is easy to install, configure and most importantly, use. I am pleased that eIT have managed to maintain this from the first version I tried (Easy Linux 2000) and still offer a complete distribution at the same time for whatever purpose system you need. I would recommend this distribution to anyone who is new to Linux and even people with only a little knowledge of PCs - it really is that easy (no, they didn’t pay me to say this..).

Thanks to Katja Breinlinger of eIT GmbH for providing me with a full copy of Easy Linux 2.4 for test purposes.
