Netscape is no more
Date: Sunday, July 20 @ 00:09:38
Topic Netscape

The Netscape browser, which for many years was the main competitor to "the other browser" is no more. AOL have made most of the Netscape browser division workforce redundant. Netscape plan to continue to support current versions of the browser, but future releases are unlikely.
Luckily, Netscape is no longer the only alternative to Internet Explorer and the greatest loss is not the Netscape browser itself, but the many Netscape employees who develop the Mozilla browser.
In related news (maybe or maybe not in response to the activity at Netscape), the Mozilla Organisation has become the Mozilla Foundation to "continue to promote the development, distribution and adoption of the award-winning Mozilla standards-based web applications". AOL has promised to donate $2 million to the foundation and Sun Microsystems and Red Hat are also planning to contribute.
