 OpenOffice.org 1.1 Released
Sun Microsystems admin writes "The latest release of the popular open source OpenOffice.org office suite is now available.
OpenOffice.org said it was "proud" of its 1.1 versions for Windows (98/ME/NT/2000/XP), Linux (x86 & PowerPC), and Solaris on SPARC.

In addition to the usual word-processor, spreadsheet and presentation applications, the latest release introduces enhancements including a "revolutionary" XML file format, one-click PDF (Adobe Acrobat) export and Macromedia Flash export for presentations and drawings.

Also on the table is enhanced MS Office file compatibility, accessibility support and a faster load times. Supported languages include English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, Chinese (simplified & traditional), Korean and Japanese.

You can download OpenOffice.org here."

 Inland Revenue considers ditching Microsoft
Sun Microsystems admin writes "The Revenue has held high-level talks with Sun Microsystems about plans for its 70,000 desktops.

Senior US-based Sun executives visited the UK to discuss the issues involved in migrating Windows and Office users to Linux and Sun's StarOffice software.

Many of the Revenue's PCs run NT4 Workstation software, which Microsoft will cease to support from June next year.

Many large Microsoft users are investigating an alternative to Windows, following the software giant's controversial changes to its licensing policy, which came into effect on 1 August."

 OpenOffice.org suite goes 1.0
Sun Microsystems Anonymous writes "OpenOffice.org 1.0 has been released and is largely unavailable for free download. OpenOffice.org itself is apparently under some severe pressure right now. Best to give it a couple of days for the crowds die down.
It will also be available from the usual CD distributors of course.

OpenOffice is the open source implementation of Sun's StarOffice, sharing the same code base as StarOffice 6.0. It claims to be the largest open source project ever, with more than 7.5 million lines of code, and in the 18 month development period the OpenOffice.org community says there have been 4.5 million downloads of pre-1.0 versions."

Sun to charge for Star Office 6
Sun Microsystems Anonymous writes "Free versions of Star Office will now only be available to Solaris users. Free versions for Linux and Windows users will no longer be offered!
A homemade translation of the first article to report this reads, "With version 6.0 of Star Office, scheduled to be released in May, Sun has changed the product politics of their Office package, which had been freely distributed since the aquisition of Hamburg-based Star Division. In the future, Sun wishes to charge license fees for usage of the Windows and Linux versions. Only the version for Sun's own operation system Solaris will remain free."

So, they're saying that they support Linux 100%, while still pushing Solaris? Doesn't sound like a good combination to me..."
